Project description

The goal of this project was to design a compelling billboard campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, with a specific focus on educating drivers and encouraging safer driving practices.

Background

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) works tirelessly to reduce accidents, fatalities, and injuries resulting from impaired driving. This project aimed to support their mission by designing two distinct billboard formats: a horizontal billboard for highways and a vertical billboard for bus stops.

Empathize

Empathize

Empathize

For this campaign, I focused on the issue of drunk driving, targeting drivers of all ages, with a particular focus on young adults. This demographic is particularly vulnerable to risky behaviors such as drinking and driving due to factors like peer pressure, social norms, and a sense of invincibility.

My goal was to design billboards that would evoke empathy, encourage safe driving habits, and serve as a call-to-action. The message needed to be impactful yet simple, given the limited time a driver has to view the billboard (only a few seconds on the highway). The designs needed to immediately communicate the serious consequences of drunk driving.

Define

Define

The core issue is the prevalence of drunk driving and speeding, which contribute significantly to road accidents, injuries, and fatalities. My objective was to change behaviors and attitudes regarding these dangerous driving practices and to create a sense of responsibility and safety among drivers.

The campaign was designed for NHTSA, a federal agency dedicated to reducing road-related deaths, injuries, and economic losses. Success criteria for the project include:

  • Increased awareness of the dangers of drunk driving

  • Shifted attitudes towards safer driving habits

  • Measurable reduction in alcohol-related accidents and speeding violations

Ideation

Ideation

I sketched ideas ideas for horizontal billboards (for highways) and vertical billboards (for bus stops), using Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects to bring these concepts to life.

Horizontal Billboard Sketches (for highway)
These billboards are designed to be seen in a matter of seconds, so I prioritized clear visuals and concise messaging. The visual elements are bold and impactful, ensuring they capture attention quickly. Here are the six sketches

Vertical Billboard Sketches (for bus stops)
These ads are more informational, with designs encouraging curiosity and directing viewers to the NHTSA website for more facts. The key here is interactivity and motivation. These are the six sketches I developed:

Horizontal Billboard (Highway Design)
For the highway billboard, I chose my Crushed Beer Can concept. The crushed beer can symbolizes the impact of drunk driving, with a car crashed into it. The text “A LITTLE high is still TOO high to drive” is bold and placed strategically for maximum visibility. I also added a blood drip and caution tape to amplify the seriousness of the message. The NHTSA logo is prominently displayed at the bottom right.

Bus Stop Billboard (Interactive Design)
For the bus stop billboard, I selected my Car Crashing into the Screen idea. This design uses animation (a GIF) to simulate a car charging toward the viewer, creating a more interactive and engaging experience. The phrase “Don’t drink and DrIvE” is emphasized with the red "DIE" for impact. I included NHTSA’s website information and kept the same dark color palette for continuity.

Feedback

Through a class critique, I received positive feedback on the clarity of the message and the attention-grabbing nature of the designs. One suggestion was to enhance the blood drips on the crushed beer can in the highway billboard, making it more 3D and shiny to match the boldness of the text. I implemented this suggestion, and it made the design even stronger and more visually impactful.

This was one of my most enjoyable projects. I learned a lot about designing for public awareness and the importance of visual impact in such a fast-paced medium. The project allowed me to explore billboard design in depth, and I discovered how much I love the challenge of designing impactful messages that reach a wide audience in a matter of seconds.

Moving forward, I plan to delve deeper into billboard campaigns and explore more ways to leverage visuals and messaging for social change. I’m excited about the possibility of expanding this project to include digital billboards and other interactive elements that further engage viewers.
